READING NEWS - Disrupt Your thinking

Picture
Reading is important. We know that, yet the 21st Century is hitting us hard with so many options, so many distractions. I hear it from my big kids and even my friends and family. "I read all the time, I read the news on my phone...I read twitter." There is a difference between reading and important reading. The difference between reading a cereal box or a headline, and reading for depth. And it is not just the distractions, let's face it I binge watch for entertainment, and have said "I don't have time to read." It is the distractions AND how we think and TEACH about reading and what we choose to read.
I read a book called Disruptive Thinking: Why How We Read Matters by Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst and it really spoke to a concern I have for people today. Reading has become a task instead of an experience. When we do important reading, we are meant to wonder, disagree, laugh, explore, learn, cry... The authors of Disruptive Thinking express that, "Reading ought to change you." Sometimes it is in small ways, and sometimes it completely shifts your mindset, but important reading leaves a mark.

What reading changed you?
